Pet insurance is becoming more and more popular in the veterinary medicine world. Unlike human medical insurance, pet insurance does not pay the hospital directly, which means there is no network! You can choose whatever veterinary hospital or clinic you’d like to take your pet.
You pay your veterinarian directly, and then you submit your receipt to your pet insurance provider. Then, they reimburse you directly according to your plan. Most pet insurance providers have options that reimburse you up to 90% back.
We highly recommend comparing multiple pet insurance providers before making a final decision. Here’s a list of things to consider when choosing a pet insurance provider:
- Consider a monthly budget for your premium and start from there. Monthly premium amounts will vary depending on your pet’s age and breed.
- How much will you be reimbursed? 70%? 80%? 90%?
- What is included in your plan? Some plans include wellness services only, sick services only, or both. It’s up to you to decide what you and your pet need.
- How easy is it to file claims? Make sure you choose a provider with an easy claim process. If it’s too annoying to file claims, you won’t, and we want you to utilize your pet insurance if you’re paying for it.
- Does your pet have any existing medical conditions? Most pet insurance providers will not cover pre-existing conditions, but each provider may define “pre-existing conditions” differently. We recommend calling the provider to review your pet’s medical history and ask what will be covered and what will not.
